If You’re Not a Rose, You Need an Editor

Ah, summer. We hardly knew ya. Everything in my garden has pretty much come and gone—the tomatoes, the peppers, the herbs, the flowers. But my senses were surprised a few days ago when a vision of perfection appeared.

Multi-colour rose in full bloom

End-of-summer surprise

The rose stands tall—to my shoulders!—and measures a full 6 inches in diameter. The fragrance is big and fresh and satisfying. When Beauty asked her father to bring her a rose from his travels, this is the rose she had in mind.

Clearly, there’s no improving Mother Nature’s handiwork.

But what about yours?

Today, I came across this Business Insider article, which blames generalization for the inability to effectively edit one’s own text. This means that when you read your text, you tend to assess the meaning and easily skip over the editorial problems you should be looking for.

Here’s the fix for text that needs to wow its audience, as that rose wowed me: #hireaneditor.
